10/23/08

As promised, I was off yesterday. I went to the dentist so they could numb my mouth and scrape the barnacles from my teeth. Yeah, apparently I have bad gums from all those years of not going to see the dentist. Oh well, what are you going to do? So, after the dentist visit, while I still had “floppy face,” mom and I went to Rockfish for lunch. What I could taste of it, was good. I apparently didn’t bite through my tongue or anything so I guess it was a successful dining experience. On the way home from that, we stopped at the Benbrook YMCA to early vote. I felt like such a señor citizen. We got in and out of there pretty quickly and headed on home. Pat called to see what I was up to because he had a doctor’s appointment and skipped work as well. We decided to go shop shopping. We got a few phone numbers and he’s going to call about them. John texted me a few times to keep me updated on his schedule so we could meet up in the evening. It being Wednesday and all, we had a “shop night” scheduled. Of course now that I'm armed, I'm a bit “range happy” so I suggested we go to Wal Mart, buy ammo, and then go shoosting. He agreed to that. Also, he needed to put his white Versa in the shop for some transmission work, necessitating the borrofication (yeah, I made up a word) of Fifi. When he alerted me to the fact that he was headed back to his office, I called to finalize a plan. I would meet him there and we’d roll. I got there about ten minutes before he was ready to go so I sat and listened to the radio for a bit. He came out and we headed to Wal Mart. Once we got an associate to help us, we bought 100 rounds each of .45 for me and 9mm for him. His little bullets are so cute! Anyhoo, on the way out I caused his eyes to roll when I had to stop and empty my little girlie bladder. He went for the truck. From there we stopped at his house and rolled to the range. I didn’t try out the Judge because we priced .45 Long Colt and .410 shotgun ammo and found it to be a bit on the pricey side. At that point though, I was still thinking about a Judge over the 1911. We burned through about fifty rounds each and headed out. I concentrated on “point and shoot” accuracy this time. I'm accurate enough that all of my shots were within a couple inches of what I was intending to hit. Suffices to say, anyone on the receiving end would have the fight taken out of them with my first shot, I'm pretty sure. I also popped off one of the “self defense” rounds to see how it compared to the “range ammo.” From my perspective, I couldn’t tell much difference. John said it was considerably louder though and it was a tad more accurate. See, I loaded one round of RA and one of SD in the clip and aimed for the head of the target. The RA dropped an inch or so and went to the right, as all my shots had been doing, while the SD ammo put a clean hole, dead center of the target’s face. Oh, the SD ammo also cut the paper cleaner than the RA, I forgot to mention that. I went back to the RA and loaded a full eight rounds in the clip. I was tempted to pop them off “rapid fire” but remembered John said they frown on that kind of thing. At one point, John came over to my lane and asked if I could move my shoosting position either a foot forward or back as all my brass was ejecting through the gap into his face. Oops, sorry. I tried to keep that in mind and went through a few more clip’s worth. I like shoosting! When we were done, we went out to turn in our “eyes and ears” and I asked if they sold clips for the 1911. They did but not the kind John prefers and not at the best price. We decided to go to “Cheaper Than Dirt” there in the crotch of I-35 and Loop 820 up by my office. I knew it was there, or at least knew there was a gun shop of some kind there at one time, but had never been in there. We found the same kind of clip as the other two I have and then shopped some more. The only Judges they had were “double action only” models with bobbed hammers. The price on the blued all steel model, as opposed to the Ultralight, was pretty good actually, but I wasn’t ready to do it yet. Of course once we priced their .45 Long Colt and .410 shotgun ammo, I decided the 1911 might just be the gun to keep. Of course the guy at the range told John he’d have an answer for him about buying the 1911 next Wednesday. By then I might change my mind again. We’ll see. I really like that Judge. And if I could just basically “trade” the 1911 for the blued guy at CTD… I don’t know. The ammo is cheaper for the 1911, and I have always wanted one… I don’t know. The Judge could, possibly, be seen to make more sense as my self defense gun. Not to mention it is pretty cool. I guess I'll wait until John hears from the guy next Wednesday, then I'll see if they’ll let me pop off a few rounds in their Judge. Of course it wouldn’t, strictly, be fair to “test drive” their gun and then buy somewhere else. Dang, I wish I'd fired that Judge last night. I almost said, “shot that Judge” but that could have been taken out of context and used against me somehow. Well, I'm “needed” in the Bored Room, and I just finished another page, so I guess I'll call it a rant. Toodles.
