Ok, so the other day I was goofing around with my “922r Compliance” spreadsheet
when Gregg called. When he asked what I
was doing, I told him, “Goofing around with my ‘922r Compliance’ spreadsheet.” He thought it uncanny because he was calling to
ask me what it would take to convert his father’s Saiga 12 to a pistol
grip. I worked up another spreadsheet
with all the necessary compliance parts, some “nice to have but not 100%
necessary” parts, and a few really cool bits that I feel he could do without…
but are really friggin’ cool. I sent the
‘sheet to him for his perusal and almost forgot about it. Yesterday, I was goofing around with my
“Saiga Conversion Parts” spreadsheet when Gregg called. When he asked what I was doing… you can see
where this is going, right? Actually, I
answered the phone with, “How did you know I was goofing around with your
spreadsheet?” We discussed options,
since he can't afford all of the parts I listed right away. I told him about the “spare” AR buffer tube
style trunnion and butt stock mount I have as well as the SAW style pistol
grip. We went over the parts count
necessary and came to the conclusion that if he were to just buy a trigger
group, piston puck, and AR style adjustable butt stock, then use my trunnion/butt
stock mount and pistol grip; he could also afford a couple twenty round drum
magazines. When I told Larry about the
plan, he misunderstood what butt stock I was talking about and thought I meant
the adjustable “Thumb Hole” stock I used to have on my tactical 7.62x39
rifle. I had totally forgotten that one
when Gregg and I were talking. I'll
suggest it as well because, since it isn’t technically a pistol grip, he
wouldn’t even have to do the trigger group and piston puck to be in
compliance. I'd still suggest doing the
trigger group, which is worth at least two US made parts after I modify it for
use in a Saiga, just for the improved trigger feel. That was why I did it on Woody, my “Hunting”
7.62x39 rifle. So, I said all of that to
say this, while shopping for Gregg's parts again yesterday, I found ten round
stripper clips for speed loading 7.62x39 magazines. They were $10.00 for twenty clips… so I
bought sixty of them. When they arrive,
I will be able to pre-load 600 rounds of 7.62x39 ammo in anticipation of the
Zombie Apocalypse. I've already gone in
and edited my “Firepower Inventory” spreadsheet. With all of the stripper clips and magazines
loaded, I'll have 910 rounds of 7.62x39 ready to go when the Fit hits the
Shan. Hmm, maybe I should get another
nine stripper clips to make it an even 1,000 rounds loaded and ready. Nah, 910 is enough… sort of. Besides, I'll also be able to load: 55 rounds
of 12 gauge, 41 rounds of .45 Colt (or 36 rounds of .45C and 5 rounds of .410
shotgun in the Judge), 24 rounds of .45 ACP, 19 rounds of .380, 136 rounds of
9mm, and 30 rounds of .22 LR for a grand total of 1,215 rounds. Of course if we load one in the pipe of each
gun we jump up to 1,225! Hmm, I wonder
if I might be classed as a “Gun Nut” right about now. Nah, probably not, I am a “Firearms
Aficionado.” Yeah, I like that better.
