Ok, I was debating whether or not I was going to
tell this story because I didn’t want to be chastised by John for being
frivolous with my money… but I guess I'm going to have to after all. First off, I used $500.00 of the money from
the sale of the Mini to get all of my 5.56x45/.223 ammo out of “hock” with
Larry. He and I went to Bloodbath &
Beyond after work one evening last week where I controlled myself very
well. I did not buy the .50 AE Dessert
Eagle XIX they had… mainly because I was $400.00 short and I'd told Larry to
keep me from doing anything THAT stupid.
I also did not buy the $400.00 7.62x39 AK pistol which I grokked for
quite some time. Larry convinced me it
would be much like the .45 Colt “Mare’s Leg” pistol I used to own which was
very cool, but virtually useless as a shooter.
Oh, it shot fine, but there was no way to aim the thing. It was strictly “Spray and Pray.” The AK pistol would be the same way. So I walked away from that… well, and
everything else at BB&B that night. We ate at Taco Casa then went to his house to
pick up the ammo. When I got home, I
realized I was not as stocked-up on 5.56x45/.223 as I thought. I decided I'd go buy another 180 rounds
Saturday. See, BB&B was having a
“Tax Free Sale” where everything was basically 8.25% off… what the price tag
said was what you paid, sort of thing.
Saturday morning I met John at the shop where we looked at stuff and
waited for Cody to arrive. Cody was
going to look at buying John's most recent 510 wagon… or something, I wasn’t
really listening. After he left, John
and I went to the swap meet at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie. We didn’t really find anything we needed. After napping for a bit, I decided I'd go
back to BB&B for that ammo… and to grok the 7.62x39 AK pistol again. Yeah, I'm dumb. Move on.
Fortunately, BB&B was already closed for the evening when I arrived
sparing me from doing something dumb. I
went to Academy instead and bought the ammo for which I was looking. Sunday I did make it back to BB&B… dumb,
remember? Fortunately, they had sold the
7.62x39 AK pistol! Whew! I had a look at the .223 caliber AK pistol
but decided I really did NOT need to drop $800.00 on that… $400.00 I could have
done, not twice that. Anyhoo, next I
decided to take a look at a Mosin Nagant.
I'm not sure if I ever mentioned it but there is a company out there who
makes a Bullpup stock for the 91/30 Mosin Nagant rifle… and I want one so
bad. I asked if they, BB&B, had a
Mosin Nagant with a shitty stock, which they did. It has a wicked gouge on one side and some
scratches on the other… one of the “Dog Collar” trim rings is missing as
well. They are currently selling for
twice what they used to, which was a whopping $80.00, so I did have to shell
out $160.00 for it. Oh yeah, I bought
the thing. Then I went home and cleaned
about a gallon of Cosmoline out of it.
My fingers still stink. Ok, they
don’t really, I washed with soap and water several times after handling the
gun. Wait, I did not go straight home
after all. BB&B didn’t have any
7.62x54r ammo so I trekked up to Cabela’s.
There I bought 100 rounds and a plastic ammo storage case thingy… then I
went home and cleaned half of Russia’s Cosmoline supply out of the weapon. After I had grokked the gun for a while, I decided
to see if it would actually fit in the gun cabinet. It does… just. Then I went on line and bought a Timney
trigger for it and sent an e-mail to the Bullpup stock guy. I received an e-mail back from him saying
he’s waiting on a few parts to come back from the powder coater and will
invoice me as soon as he has a stock to ship my way. I'm giddy.
Oh, speaking of Timney triggers, I also bought one for the Tavor last
week… another frivolity I was loath to mention for fear of chastisement from
John. Meh, whaddayagonnado? I still have enough Mini money left over to
buy the other thing which some might consider frivolous: an Hardbody truck with
a blowed-up VG-30 which John knows about somewhere. I'll tell that story when I have more
details… or the truck, whichever comes first.
So, that’s about all I have for y'all today. Toodles.
