11/4/13
I don’t really have a lot to report.
Saturday morning I met John at the Mazda dealer where he was having his
car serviced. We then went to breakfast
where I asked, “So what time is ‘Ender’s Game’ showing?” He looked it up and then texted his wife to
see if his son wanted to see it with us.
He did, apparently, because we swung by his house to pick him up on the
way to the show. They did a pretty good
job with the adaptation. It stuck fairly
well to the book. Obviously they left
some stuff out, but it wasn’t important to the story they were telling. If they want to try and do the sequels
though, they may have some backtracking to do.
All in all, I liked it. I guess I
went in with low expectations and was therefore pleasantly surprised with the
outcome. After that, I dropped them off
at home and went home myself. Mom and I
went to lunch at Razoo’s and then I wasted the afternoon waiting for the car
show that evening. I made a half-assed
attempt to start The Seven and then went in Fiona. I had put the Hello Kitty refrigerator in the
front seat to take to the shop, along with the push bar John had acquired for
me in the trunk. After the show, I
headed to the shop, glad to have my Smith & Wesson 9mm on my hip. I dropped off the fridge and push bar then
went home. Sunday I got a text from
Larry saying he was getting ready to go to the gun show. I reminded him of daylight savings giving us
an extra hour then settled in to wait for him to say he was on his way. When I got that call, I headed towards the
credit onion. I took surface streets
thinking he was going to be longer than I was so he beat me there. I took out another $200.00 from the ATM and
hopped in his truck. We went to the
show. It was one of the big shows so we
started in the small room across the concourse.
I saw a Ruger Mk III pistol I liked… yes, I already have a Mk III but
this one was a little different. I
didn’t buy it just then. There wasn’t
anything else in the small room to strike my fancy so we headed to the big room. There we began shopping. I saw a few things I liked, but nothing well
enough to prize any money out of me.
Eventually, around “new” 1130 h when our bodies thought it was 1230 h,
we stopped for a snack. Actually, now
that I think about it though, it really isn’t all that important, it was as
soon as we entered the big room. We ate
while we walked the first aisle. I don’t
recall seeing any real standouts until we go to The Russian’s table. He had a Tavor. Actually, he had two. One had the factory installed Meprolight
optics like I have for the Saiga 12, while the other had a flat top with
Picatinny rail optic mounts… and some kind of aftermarket optic installed. They had prices on them but they were
confusing. Larry and I grokked them both
and I decided I really want one. We put
them down and walked away. We finished
the rows and began our customary “go back to look at shit we wanted” walk. While Larry looked at something, I wandered
off and found another Tavor with factory optics. It was clearly marked $2,495.00 and I could
feel my credit card in my wallet tempting me.
I handled the gun a bit and thought long and hard (tee hee, I said
"long and hard!") about it.
Sanity prevailed and I walked away.
Then I found another Tavor with the flat top Picatinny rail for
$1,999.00 at another table. I fondled it
for a bit and then went to check on Larry.
I drug him to the two guns and he agreed that those were better prices than
The Russian had and that the $1,999.00 gun was the best price we’d ever seen. I then showed him the Kel Tec KSG I was also
considering at $1,499.00 but he talked me down from that ledge. Eventually it was decided that I didn’t need
to drop two thousand dollars on a gun I don’t have room for in my cabinet which
is also in a new caliber. We farted
around with stuff for him until they booted us out of the arena. So, I was a good boy and didn’t buy a
frivolous gun… yet. I'll probably be
getting one at one of the upcoming shows… because I'm dumb. From the convention center we went to
Benito’s and had flaming cheese and cow face tacos. He dropped me at my car and I went home. Now I'm at work talking to y'all. Well, I've got to go hold someone’s hand in
the Viewing Gallery so I guess I'll call it a rant. It’ll probably be like last week with sparse
entries from me since I've got nothing else to say. We’ll see.
