I was a bit premature with that assessment of the survivability of Toshiba laptops. When I got home and tried to log onto the intergoogles I found I could not... even though the wireless indicator said I had a good connection and internet access. Eventually, after hooking up with a LAN cable direct, I made contact and was able to get to the webs wirelessly. Unfortunately the connection was so slow that the laptop took a swan dive out the second story window onto the concrete pad of the air conditioner compressor. I then decided it was time to try out a Chromebook. Mom and I went to Best Buy. I was approached by the sales person and I said, "Can I get a laptop with Windows 7?" When I was told, "No," I asked about Chromebooks. She led me to them and I saw that the biggest, most expensive one was only $299.00 so I said, "I'll take that one." She reminded me that they were pretty much just for web surfing but I went ahead and bought it. Yeah, I shouldn't have. It really IS only good for web surfing. After dinner, on the way home, I realized I might actually be dumb. Monday afternoon I backed up the newly deceased laptop, including a system image. It is my understanding that all I really need to do is get another W7 'top and reload that. I'm probably going to do just that, but I'll keep the new Chromebook as well because... to be honest, I'd be embarrassed to take it back. Besides, it does kind of surf the web pretty much ok... sort of thing.
